Choosing the right buoyancy system is one of the key equipment decisions for every diver. Many of you ask us: which Hollis system will be best for me? The answer is: it depends on you and your diving style.
Why does the choice of system matter?
For years, Hollis has been creating premium equipment for technical divers and advanced recreational divers. Our configurations are based on solid backplates, harnesses, and modern buoyancy wings. But with so many options, the choice can be difficult – that's why we present specific recommendations below.
Ideal if:
- you dive with a single cylinder,
- you value simplicity, streamlined design, and durability,
- you dive in warm waters (ST Travel) or cold waters (ST System).
Features:
- Harness made from a single piece of webbing – no buckles or unnecessary elements.
- Backplate 2.0 (aluminum or steel) – designed with ergonomics and stability in mind.
- ST Wing – with a profile that tapers towards the top, which increases buoyancy around the hips and allows for better trim in a horizontal position.
- Built-in single tank adapter – allows direct connection of the wing to the backplate without an additional adapter. This solution is lighter and ideal for travel, as it eliminates the need to carry extra gear.
Configurations:
- ST Travel System: ST22 wing, aluminum backplate 2.0, Delrin buckles, comfort pad for backplate 2.0 – consisting of two elements: an upper part and an additional lumbar part, ensuring comfort when wearing the set.
- ST System: ST35 wing, steel backplate 2.0, steel buckles, comfort pad for backplate 2.0 – the same modular construction, which works great with heavier configurations.
Ideal if:
- you dive recreationally with a single cylinder,
- you expect comfort and harness adjustability,
- you want to retain the ability to expand your configuration.
Features:
- Elite 2 harness – fully adjustable, with soft shoulder pads and buckles.
- Backplate 2.0 (aluminum or steel).
- ST Wing – the same tapered profile as in the ST, improving trim and providing more buoyancy at the hips.
- Built-in single tank adapter – weight savings and ease of assembly.
Configurations:
- ST Elite Travel System: ST22 wing, aluminum backplate, Delrin buckles, comfort pad for backplate 2.0 – composed of two elements: an upper part and a lumbar part.
- ST Elite: ST35 wing, steel backplate 2.0, steel buckles, comfort pad for backplate 2.0 – provides comfort both when gearing up and during longer dives.
Ideal if:
- you dive with a twinset,
- you prioritize durability and technical trim,
- you dive in cold waters or plan deep dives.
Features:
- Steel backplate 2.0 – stable and corrosion-resistant.
- Harness from a single piece of webbing – a classic technical solution.
- DT50 Wing – profile also tapered towards the top, more buoyancy at the hips, improved trim and stability in a horizontal position.
- Optimized for various twinset sizes.
- Comfort pad for backplate 2.0 – consists of two separate parts: an upper and a lumbar part.
Tip: If you sometimes want to dive with a single cylinder, consider buying mounting straps – the system can then be temporarily converted.
Summary – choose the system for you
Each of our buoyancy systems has been designed with a specific type of diver and diving scenario in mind. Hollis wings offer a tailored profile, well-thought-out buoyancy, and a lightweight construction that makes a difference – especially when traveling or during technical dives.
