Jacket or Wing?

For people starting their adventure with diving, choosing the right equipment can be a significant challenge. Diving systems come in several different types, and each of them is offered by various manufacturers on the market, differentiated to meet the needs of women, men, or children.

What are diving jackets?

A diving jacket is a special type of backpack that allows for changing buoyancy underwater. In our jargon, you might encounter the term buoyancy control device. Due to the long name, the English term is used.

There are 3 types of jackets: the classic — simply a jacket, a wing, and a hybrid. The first was created for divers who prioritize comfort on one hand, and quality of workmanship and safety underwater on the other. Among the various offerings from manufacturers, products from the Oceanic brand are highly regarded. This is an ideal solution for beginners, or for those who enjoy underwater adventures with light luggage. The manufacturer's offer includes models that weigh only 2.5 kg with a buoyancy of 13.6 kg, and they are also available in a wide range of colors. You could say it is a vest integrated with a cylinder carrier and shoulder straps — like a backpack. When choosing a jacket for yourself, you should pay attention to the stabilizing strap at chest height and the dump valves (mounted over both shoulders).

What are wings for divers?

Wings are used by more advanced divers, during so-called technical diving. In this type of buoyancy control device, instead of a carrier, there is an aluminum or steel plate, and the buoyancy bladder takes the shape of a "U" or a doughnut attached to the plate behind the diver's back. There are models that have not only a harness (sometimes adjustable) in the wing and 5 D-rings for gear. Basically, when the initial fascination with diving turns into a passion, a wing allows for greater possibilities of individual equipment configuration.
